When to Claim Compensation

Timing your compensation claim can be extremely important. Some people will just leave it until the last minute and others will want to get on with it straight away. It tends to depend on our personality as to whether we leave things later or want to get on with them quickly.

If you are making a compensation claim, the timing of when you contact the accident claim company is actually very important. You do not want to leave it too late as you may miss your chance to claim, but you may not want to do it too quickly either.

You really want to wait until you are fully recovered from your injury, before you make an injury claim. This is because you want to claim for all of the money that you are entitled to get. If you are not recovered when the case goes to court, then the judge will only be able to base the amount of compensation on the severity of your injury up until the court date. You can also claim costs such as lost salary due to being off sick, prescriptions costs, transport to hospital and things like that. If you are not fully recovered, then you might find that you have costs after the court case that you will not be able to claim back. Once the case has been settled in court, you cannot go back and change things afterwards.

However, you do have to remain aware that you only get three years to make a claim. Therefore as soon as you are sure that you are fully recovered, then you need to find an accident claim company to sort out your case. It is better to get on with it straight away after you are better so that you are sure that you do not miss the dead line. If you are not fully recovered and a few years have passed then it is probably a good idea to contact a solicitor because they will be able to start working on the case. It could take quite a long time for things to be researched and evidence to be gathered and so you want to give them enough time for this.
