We All Know It: Littering Our Streets Is Unacceptable

How difficult is it to use a rubbish bin? Well, it does seem for most of today’s youth the answer is very difficult. Why can’t people just dispose of their rubbish in the correct manner and have some respect for the area in which they live. For me it seems to be a problem of upbringing. Countless times I have seen youngsters just open up a packet of crisps or sweets eat the contents and then just blindly throw the wrapper on the floor. They just don’t seem to care about it and do it without even thinking that it might upset other people that have to walk that street later. They just don’t care and that saddens me, It has to be rooted in their upbringing. It seems we always delegate responsibility to authorities - we wait for the council's power cleaners to clean up after us, as well as their garbage trucks. When my children were growing up I instilled in them a sense of pride in their appearance and a respect for others which sadly seems lacking in a lot of people these days. If only all parents could explain that littering is unacceptable and it takes such a little effort to keep things tidy then we could all live in a clean and healthy environment. I’ve lost count of the times that I have corrected idiots that persist in littering. From the child I lambasted for throwing his wrapper on the floor whilst staring at a rubbish bin just yards away to the adult who threw his apple core out of his open car window at a gas station. He was so shocked and upset when I picked it up and gave it back to him that he immediately got out of his car and put it in the bin which was provided. Perhaps if more people embarrassed these thoughtless few into realising that their behaviour is unacceptable then we might have tidier streets. Let’s hope that things will change for the better in the future if we have the correct education of our young. Unfortunately I don’t hold out much hope.
