A Two-story Living Room Waterfall

posted on 12 February 2012

It all started with a search for hardwood flooring uk in Google. Then I found the flooring supplier who refloored my entire house. That inspired me onto dreaming even bigger dreams. Given adequate resources and sufficient time I would like to construct a waterfall two storeys tall inside my house. I have always been calmed be the sound of cascading water and I very much enjoy reading in secluded outdoor spaces with running water. Having a waterfall in my living room would allow me to experience this peace without leaving home. I would construct a very rough faux rock wall with a multitude of small pools formed in a natural looking way that would collect water cascading from a shallow pool above. The entire rock facade would be approximately ten feet wide and twenty feet tall with a three foot deep pool below that juts out into the room five feet. I would install a pump that drew water from the pool on the floor and carried it behing the rock face into the shallow pool at the top. The amount of water pumped would be enough to have an awe-inspiring fall without a great amount of splashing that could damage the rest of the room. Around the pool on top and the smaller collection pools on the rock face there would be living plants that obtain light energy from skylights in the ceiling above. I would stock the pool with koi fish that would provide something for this lonely soul to care for as well as simple companionship. With the addition of some comfortable chairs around the floor pool and a small collection of interesting books, the DIY project would be completed to my satisfaction.

Galley Kitchens Belong on Ships not in Houses

posted on 4 February 2012

I live in a Southern California home with an open floor plan. The landscaping can lead you to believe on a true California summer day you are sitting in Hawaii. The one thing about this house that we have plans to remodel soon is the galley style kitchen. We will be taking down a wall that separates the kitchen from the living room. This will allow a sense of opening the kitchen and living room. There will be a bar put there with bar stools so guests can sit and still have a sense of the rooms being divided. The cabinets will be torn out and replaced and granite counter tops will be put in. All new stainless steel appliances will be next and be placed on different walls allowing us better use of the actual counter space. My favorite will be an island in the middle of the room and the boring bay window will become a beautiful new bay window with seating for kitchen guests. All these changes should give the kitchen a boxier feel and make the space feel much more coherent. Right now the galley style makes the room feel long and narrow and leaves us with an inability to use the kitchen effectively. We will be doing most of the tear down ourselves saving a lot of money. We are budgeting $30,000 for the entire project from start to finish. We have neighbors and close friends that range in trades from architects to electrical engineers that have already come aboard for the project.

Flies, Mosquitoes and Cockroaches, Number One Enemy

posted on 24 December 2011

House pests are probably the most common problem that people have. One hand you have this flying pest like flies and mosquitoes, and on the other hand you have those nasty ones like cockroaches hiding in dark places. People most often have problem with mosquitoes. These pests are still keeping the fight running even though many preparations are made against them. And there are the traditional boring flies. People say that when the weather is changing, they star to bite and in that period they are so annoying, people often get aggravated by them. Bug spray can be helpful against both mosquitoes and flies - as well as fly zapper for flies - but sometimes it smells funny and unpleasant. This new methods are also helpful with inserting this devises with some liquid in them in electricity. Cockroaches are probably a pest that every house has them. They are probably the most resistant species on the planet. There is a scientific review in which it says that the cockroaches are resistant to radioactivity. Sprays don’t work on them and they are probably more dangerous to humans then to cockroaches. Still with years in the past, the most effective method to kill a cockroach with out harm to the humans is with shoe.

My Experience With Pest Control, or How I Spent a Hundred Bucks and Still Had Fleas in the House

posted on 5 November 2011

The time: summer 2007. The place: my house. The problem: millions of fleas. The solution: call a pest control company. Normally I deal with pests myself. I buy in things like fly screens to deal with them myself. This time I had to call in a company. Where the fleas came from I have no idea. We had a cat and a dog that both lived in the house, both clean and flealess. But suddenly we were overrun with the darn things. The carpet seemed full of fleas, morning, noon and night. As soon as I put my feet on the floor they started chewing on my ankles. As I sat at my computer, they chewed on my ankles. The fleas were out to get me, but I was ready to fight back. I sprayed, I bombed, I sprinkled, but to no avail. Finally, I called in the heavy hitter - a professional pest control man. He came to the house, looked around, said, "No problemo!" and got to work. He sprayed his magic spray along the baseboards throughout the entire house. He sprayed in the crawl space under the house. He sprayed around the outside of the house. Then he got in his truck and drove away with my personal check. The fleas never so much as sneezed. I called the pest control pro back. He repeated his magical spraying ritual, then drove away, no check this time. The fleas sneezed a time or too, then got after my ankles again with renewed gusto. Exasperated, I called for a meeting with the head flea. We quickly worked out a deal. If I would leave them alone, they would move out after two more weeks. So I did, and they did. The fleas were gone at last, but so was my faith in modern chemical pest control. Never again will I waste a personal check on such unmagical magic.

It is a program that will give you what you want

posted on 13 October 2011

In the world that we live in today, everything that is undertaken is through caution. Everyone is advised to be very careful about what they do and ascertain that they have gotten it right before moving any further. Looking for roofing services can be quite challenging and when you finally find them, they might not be what you need. profiled steel roofer is what you will need to get what you want in roofing. This profiled steel roofer is a roofing search program that enables users to find the kinds of roofing services that they want. They will fill a form that the program avails to them then launch the search engine and in a few seconds, they will have what they want. The search program will locate the services being sought for and give the users all the details about them. The program is installed in the computers or phones of users who use it to locate the services they are in need of. When they have completed the search, they will then remove the program and forget about it.

Adding Light and Access to an Existing Foyer

posted on 12 October 2011

Having just completed our staircase - complete with wonderful wooden stair parts added to them, there are other jobs to get on with. Our front hallway, or foyer, is functional, yet long, dark and basically a dead end to another long hallway. Our house is an L-shape ranch style, and I would like to open up the room adjacent to the front hallway, so that the "dining room" has access to the hall, and is more functional. We have an open kitchen/dining/living room area, and the "dining room" is quite forgotten. Because the west side of the house is made up of all windows, the light from the "dining room" would flow into the hallway once the passage is made, to light up the very dark space. The "dining room" does not get any use except as a computer/exercise room, and I believe that it would be more inviting if it had a different, more convenient access. My only concern is for the stability of the wall if a portion of the wall was knocked out to make an open door. I do not want to cause additional stress to the existing beams.

On Creepy Crawlers and How We Got Rid of Them

posted on 7 October 2011

Well, we were excited to be having our first baby and bought an almost 100 year old home that we could afford. Unfortunately, the first day we moved in I noticed immediately it was infested with centipedes, like giant, dog-sized centipedes! I'd dealt with smaller bugs like bed bugs using bed bug sprays, but centipedes? A whole new animal here! We went to great lengths to cheaply rid the house of them. We covered all of our important stuff and set off two bug bombs in different areas of the house. This worked for a few days but they came back, and then we found babies! So, in desperation we called Orkin and they sent a guy to come spray the whole house, inside and out, and garage, every other week. The best part was all the chemicals were safe for our pets and our new baby. The chemical they used, hollowed out the bugs’ exoskeleton or something like that. It was expensive though, about 80 bucks every other month. But worth it to me.

Finding the Right Way for House Pest Control

posted on 16 September 2011

As a new home owner, I was faced with many daunting tasks I'd never experienced before, one of them being house pest control. I'd not really had to deal with pests before, apart from the odd fly problem which is easily dealt with using something like framed door flyscreens. But here I was facing a much tougher problem. I'd gotten word from the realty dealer that the neighborhood has a problem with termites, the white ants that feed on wooden furniture and foundations. The house foundation is laid out with an anti-termite chemical piping system, and the pest control company have to regularly refill the pipeline. I have health concerns with the chemicals so I did some research online and came across a company that claimed to offer organic pest control substances. I gave it a try and so far the results have been fantastic. I have recommended it to my neighbors and have extended the contract for a further year.

Electricians can do a lot for you

posted on 8 September 2011

Electrical contractors of repute have self help websites to help with issues, small and minor. For major issues they would send over an inspection team to assess the situation. But when you check the websites these experts have, you would find a lot of information, especially, tips, suggestions, ideas and resources to aid you with the DIY techniques, should you opt for the same. Are you wondering how to wire a three-way switch? Do you want to do it yourself without having help from the electrician's teams? You can get that information as well from their blogs and websites online. But if you do heed our warning, when we say electricity shouldn’t be played around with, you should then seek the help of the experts, for little knowledge is too dangerous to play around with. Finally, folks, electricians are always available round the clock to help you with your needs, so please call them and don’t hesitate to check BBB for the reputation of the electrical companies in question.

Plumbing costs myths and fears

posted on 6 September 2011

Plumbing costs are important to know off and today we will tell you why. Would you question the cook how much the eggs cost for the scramble he serves? You wouldn’t do that, since you pay for the services and the raw materials included. The same would be for the costs required for plumbing. It involves everything from labor charge to the raw materials and taxes as well, so there is nothing to fear off. Most customers have expectations on plumbing costs, which are unfair. Most think by using the DIY techniques they can fix the issues themselves. Customers wonder why should they pay a dollar more for the faucet when the same thing costs a dollar less at the store. Not many think of the labor charge for installing the fixture. Plumbers would charge you for their expertise and you have to taken into the consideration the experience he has and would demand a charge for. Plus he has liability insurance and training he paid for, he would need to make up all of that, hence the plumbing costs appear different when you do it and they do it for you.

On My Experience With Raid and Fruit Flies

posted on 27 August 2011

A long time ago we had a gnat infestation (Fruit Flies) in our kitchen. We tried many methods of getting rid of the issue, like keeping the place spotless, fly strips, fly screens, even other less common methods. The fly strips at first seemed effective but later proved to be useless in getting rid of the problem. In the end it was all futile because we found out that they were coming up through the pipes and into the garbage disposal. We were at a loss, we didn't know what to do. We even hired a professional to try and get rid of the problem but it didn't work. One day we tried RAID. It was in a small can with a red top and what we did was spray the garbage disposal so that they couldn't come up from the sewage system anymore. It worked great! From that point on we lived fruit fly free and couldn't be happier.

Bathroom Storage: The Xylem Carlton Linen Tower

posted on 21 July 2011

One of the most important parts of the house is the bathroom because it is the place where we relax and bathe. This is why it is also very important to have all the things that you need in your bathroom such as extra towels, shampoos, soaps, and a lot more. In order to have all of these properly arranged, you should have a bathroom storage where you can put all of that stuff. It is not enough to have a cabinet in your bathroom. You have to make sure that the cabinet blends with the style of your bathroom. One of the simplest but most sleek bathroom storage includes Xylem Carlton Linen Tower which measures 60”H X 18”W and 16”D. It is a storage solution that would allow you to place clean towels and linen. You do not have to go out of the bathroom to get fresh and new towels, most especially when there are guests in your home. It has 2 open shelves and 3 drawers. It is also very elegant because of its antique maple finish.

Plumbing contractors or DIY

posted on 10 July 2011

A doctor never performs on his own body, a barber never cuts his own hair, so we can safely say in the past when grandma said do it yourself, you needn’t follow that anymore. Remember, when you have major plumbing issues at your workplace, it would be wise to have annual Plumbing contractors around to fix the job. They charge on a flat basis and you wouldn’t have to worry about the quality of work, since they do a good job. Hire plumbing contractors after you have done a thorough background check on the company. For that it would be wise to visit BBB. Also gather quotes from as many Plumbing contractors as possible, this would tell you for sure who are competitive and cost effective for your needs. Finally, Plumbing contractors are available round the clock, remember your hardware store runs for ten hours max, so now you make a choice, is it DIY or Plumbing contractors.

My Own Little Orchid Greenhouse

posted on 10 July 2011

There’s a botanical garden an hour away from where I live, where they specialize in bromeliads and orchids. They have this amazing orchid greenhouse which I would love to recreate on our lanai. Right now we have a typical screened lanai with a concrete floor. What I would like to do is replace all the screens with windows, maybe one or two that could open, but mainly just straight windows, and some solar security lights to protect the area. It’s not under air, so it would be easy to keep it warmer and more humid for better orchid growth. The lanai also has a pass-through from the kitchen, so once I remodeled the lanai it would be nicer to ear at the bar. That and maybe a little bistro set and a water fountain would be all the furniture I would put in there. The rest of the space I would fill with the orchids, ferns and other plants. I think my birds would like it better in there, too.

Closet Storage Solutions For the Cluttered Closet

posted on 21 June 2011

A cluttered closet defeats its purpose of being a storage place. If you want to be organized and keep things neat in your home, the first place that you should raid is your closet. You’ll need to pull things out if you want a complete reorganization and recover major storage space in your closet. One closet storage solutions that you can accomplish is to organize your stuff into different categories. Pile one for the things you use, the things you can give to your family or friends, the things you can give to charity and those that needs to be disposed. Then start putting things back in careful order. If you have a top and bottom rods for hanging clothes, use to top for the tops, jackets, blouses and dresses and the bottom rod for the pants and skirts. You can also try grouping your folded clothes together by type – sweaters, long sleeves, shorts etc. and put them in specific locations for easy access.

Cross Connection and plumbing problems

posted on 23 May 2011

The Pipeline systems are developed and constructed in such a way, where the water used for daily house hold chores is connected to that of the pipelines of the factory. There is every possibility of the water which we drink getting into cross connection issues and contaminated with wastes from the factories, and other sources. Only an expert plumber can help in setting up the pipelines correctly to avoid messy situations, such as cross connection issues. Pipelines for laundry, toilets and drinking water should be set up separately. One can also take assistance from the guidelines available on the net, to save time. As the saying goes prevention is better than cure, so it is true for setting up water pipelines as well, to avoid cross connection problems, one should plan out the entire setting first and then work towards it. Planning saves time and is more economical in nature rather than being careless about it and then face problems in future.

My Classy Shoe Storage Bench That Caught My Mom’s Attention

posted on 16 May 2011

My mom unexpectedly dropped by last weekend to check up on me. I have been busy with a new project that I never had the chance to call her for two weeks now, something that has never happened before, that’s why she got worried and paid me a visit. She commented that my place was much homier now than the previous time she came, she also asked where I got the shoe storage bench outside the main door. Actually, she initially thought that it was just an ordinary bench, but when I showed her what was inside she cannot believe that it was just another storage system. My mother is not the first one to think this, considering that I have chosen a classic mahogany as material so if you really didn’t know better you can really think that it is just one of the furniture in the house. Since she cannot stop marveling at it, I promised that I will buy her one and bring it over to her the following week I have never seen my mom that excited in a long while.

Why appliance testing ensures security to everyone who is using electrical appliances

posted on 15 May 2011

There are many institutions in this present generation that use electrical equipments to do their day to day activities. For example in houses, you will find that in homes, people use televisions, microwaves and even electric cookers, some have fridges and even vacuum cleaners that have to use electricity in order to perform its duties. Hospitals are not left in this list of institutions this is because the x ray machines used there also use electricity and there are used by many patients, in short they are very important electric devices. What I am trying to say that there are electrical appliances everywhere even in school and that is why it is a mandate for the head of these institutions to make sure that they do appliance testing. This test is compulsory because it ensures the safety of the people using it and the people around the appliances. It is better to prevent bad accidents from occurring by assuring that every security and safety measure is met. As an administrator you might be tempted to ignore this but before you give in to your temptations, think about the law suits that will destroy your life if you do not do what you are required to do.
